The Mauritanian Company for Fish Marketing (SMCP) was established in 1984 by government decree, with its headquarters located in the city of Nouadhibou and offices in Nouakchott and Las Palmas. The Mauritanian state owns 70% of its capital while the private sector holds 30%. It is one of the largest exporters of frozen Mauritanian seafood products — approximately 50,000 tons annually of octopus, squid, shrimp, sole fish, and other fish — to markets in Europe, Africa, and Japan.
