Lactose monohydrate (milk sugar) is offered in three published grades: food grade, refined grade and pharmaceutical grade. Lactose is used as a flowability and texture aid and a flavour carrier in food powders, beverage blends and infant nutrition, and — in the dedicated grade — as an excipient carrier in pharmaceutical formulations. Certificates of analysis and specification limits for each grade should be requested from the company before contracting.
